Hey there, I have pidgin and I am pretty sure that you can't. I have tried so hard to figure it out myself. The closest thing that you could do is go to Buddies>Show>and then un-check 'Buddy Details', then when you want to view the buddies away information, just hover the mouse over the screen name.

in pidgin, on my buddy interface, how do i keep the away messages under my contacts name and get rid of the buddy icons to the right of their names. i do not want them. thanks a lot for any assistance!
